"It's a...mistake to think that the enjoyment of seeing & searching can be promoted through means of coercion..."

Came across this ol' chestnut today. Here's the quote below in better (but not complete) context.

"One had to cram all this stuff into one's mind, whether one liked it or not. This coercion had such a deterring effect that, after I had passed the final examination, I found the consideration of any scientific problems distasteful to me for an entire year...It is in fact nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiousity of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom; without this is goes to wrack and ruin without fail. It is a very grave mistake to think that the enjoyment of seeing and searching can be promoted through means of coercion and a sense of duty. To the contrary, I believe it would be possible to rob even a healthy beast of prey of its voraciousness, if it were possible, with the aid of a whip, to force the beast to devour continuously, even when not hungry — especially if the food, handed out under such coercion, were to be selected accordingly." – Albert Einstein

The determination, passion, and ability to see and search for yourself has never been more important, nor has it ever been easier for the masses to inquire and discern for themselves than in this century. What, then, is the objective of formal education if not to light a fire under students, stimulating their natural curiosity and helping them to search, critique, and learn on their own and for a lifetime?

"Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is." - Isaac Asimov

Self-education_slide

Above: Keynote slide. Of course, self-education is not the "only" kind of education, but for me personally it has been the best kind. In any event, our time in formal school settings is quite short indeed. And I am not sure if I have ever been "taught" anything as much as I have had good mentors who have pointed the way and helped me to learn it. The best school system, no matter what it looks like, surely fosters a person's natural curiosity to self-educate long after they leave the formal system.

Paris-Osaka: 12 hours, great flight. Fantastic to be back in Japan!

Loved every minute of this European tour, but being away from my daughter for the first time was the bit I did not like. Can't wait until she is old enough to explore London and Paris with her dad. Of course, her great grand father was from Basle Switzerland so she may have a special interest in Switzerland as well :-) Shortly after I got back to Japan we went out for a walk and a bit of shopping. It's cool to wake up and have a morning run in Paris and be strolling around temples and shines back home by the afternoon (though some 16 hours have passed). It's really muggy, however, as we're in the middle of "tsuyu" (梅雨), the rainy season. Thanks again to all the awesome people I met in London, Paris, and Switzerland! I'll be back soon.

A few snaps from yesterday in Paris. Met up for a bit with my friend Mie from Kansai Gaidai, an aspiring young makeup artist in Paris from Japan. Wish I had more time in Paris. I must say that this city is a paradise for photographers. There is just so much beauty here; the architecture is amazing. Unfortunately, I could not get out in the early AM or at dusk, the best time for photography in the city. I can't wait to return.

Having a great time meeting people in Paris & eating good food, etc.

On the street in Paris outside the presentation theatre before the event talking to participants. Great group of people attended this event. The PZD book in French will go on sale in a few weeks in France, but those who came bought all the early release copies. Wonderful audience.
