While getting ready to leave the house, our daughter comes out from the genkan with shoes on, never a good thing in Japan — but they were my shoes, and on the wrong foot. My daughter and wife (who was laughing hysterically) thought this was a funny sight.

At the pool. I learned somehow to be afraid of the water when I was young (did not learn to swim until a teenager), but my daughter has no fear and has been loving the pool for about a year or more now. Our local pool is awesome and well used by our community.

She calls Shrek "Donkey!" She gave all the characters a kiss on the cheek. In the Fall these characters scared her, even though she loved them in DVD and book form. Now she loves the "real" ones too.

At least 2000 of Rikuzentakata's citizen's lost their lives in the tsunami of 3-11 last year. Bringing Rikuzentakata back will take years and years, but it will happen and people are having a go of it already. But as this video shows, they are starting essentially from scratch. Below is a photo that shows what the town was like before the tsunami.

Tsunamis are something I am very interested in since I grew up right on the beach in Oregon. We had several warnings and evacuations as a kid. Now it looks like a 10 meter tsunami is a real possibility in my home town (Seaside/Cannon Beach). These towns, at the very least, need to move their schools to the hills. Doing so could save 100s or 1000s of lives and provide much needed shelter and evacuation centers for the aftermath of the tsunami. But of course this takes millions if dollars. Going to be a hard sell to my hometown in Oregon, but it has to be done. Somehow I want to be involved with this issue. All I can do now is educate myself more deeply. Sent from my iPhone
